Kate's Husband's Bobbins
Afew years ago a number of unusual bobbins appear on eBay. They were often cathedral windows or mother and baby bobbins but with strange carved tails in the shape of flowers.
Having bought some from the selling, Liz reached out to her to ask if she knew the identity of the bobbin turner.
Turns out she did, but with no further information, these bobbins are named after what little we were told:
Hi Liz,
Yes I do know who made the bobbins that have intrigued you all. My husband has been a highly skilled carpenter and joiner all his working life and he started to make bobbins for me to use a long time ago and therefore I have many of his bobbins now. When he retired he took up the skill again making me even more bobbins. He has always wanted to stay anonymous as the bobbins were only made for me but with all the questions and theories that have arisen now I have been letting them go he asked that I let anyone who asked know this. The bobbins are individually turned on a lathe from bone from a local butcher and treated to sterilise them and then turned. So these are not plastic or ivory but good old fashioned bone.
I think they are some of the best bobbins I have ever used and so delicate and well turned and I hope you think so too. He only makes them for pleasure but many people seem to be enjoying them as much I do. They have all had minimal use and some have been respangled but they certainly aren’t new and a lot have been sitting in boxes.
Kate.
