Bill & Brenda Waight​

Bill and Brenda's work is easily recognisale from the clean painting and writing on the bobbins. Brenda signed her painting with her initial 'BMW' (Brenda Marion Waight).

With their midlands bobbins, the head is a slightly squashed onion bulb with a flared top, whilst the tail is a distinctive point below a disk.  Their honiton bobbins have a very recognisable pointed head.

The bobbins also often had clean curves and the turning.

Bill Waight 1933-2023

In 1976 Bill was persuaded to make lace bobbins for our 13 year old daughter.  The ladies in the group soon told him what made a good bobbin.

Bill took his pyrography kit to Lace Days & Fairs and we always had a queue of ladies wanting special messages. On one occasion a small boy stood as close as possible all morning whilst crunching a large bag of crisps right in Bill’s ear.

Our lovely customers became friends over the years. Although we had one lady who said several bobbins had snapped at the neck. After Bill had sent off replacements with apologies she mentioned she had caught her pillow in the car door. On another occasion a man made a drawing of a bobbin so he could make a copy.

Bill was a keen supporter of Southampton Football team for most of his life. He had many other hobbies including making wooden puzzles which kept family and friends amused. We both enjoyed Line and Ballroom dancing as well. He was an active member of a pensioners club serving as a committee member for many years. When we retired from Bobbin making in 2006 he joined a lawn bowls club and spent hours there.

He passed away on Boxing Day 2023 at the age of 90. It feels very strange without him as we had been happily married for 66 years.
