Tony Archer started turning bobbins in the late 1970s. Initially he made wooden bobbins, starting to turn the bone bobbins AR Archer are known for just a short while later, and soon he exclusively made bone bobbins, painted by his wife Susan.
Ben Archer started to work with his Dad in 1990, having learnt to turn while growing up. He took over AR Archer, working with his mother, after his father sadly passed away in 1991. Susan retired in the mid 1990s, and Ben’s wife Vicky now helps run the business (see their website here for the story of AR Archer bobbins).
Tony and Ben both turn beautiful bobbins, the tails reveal the identity of the turner, as Ben added an incised line to his tail, to differentiate them from his father's bobbins.
If you are interested in how the bobbins have evolved and in some cases, not evolved, over the years then why not check out their catalogue archive here.
