John Cummings

John Cummings’ bobbins have distinctive carved tails.
He is known to have turned some bobbins in Ivory as well as bone. John's bobbins were very distinctive and, often even eccentric and eclectic in their designs, with spangles sometimes almost floating below the bobbin. John Cummings was the Headmaster of Tyntesfield School and, in 1979, arranged a day of lacemaking to raise money for the school. The school, which focused on education for SEN, had been fundraising over several years for a roof for its pool and a minibus. Because of this, John was regularly featured in the local newspapers discussing his turn as a way to raise awareness of the school's fundraising efforts. The school was set the task of raising £20,000 to build a roof for their swimming pool, starting in 1979, and over the 4 years these news reports cover, the cost rose by over 50%. To give you an idea of just how much that was, my parents' mortgage for their 3-bed terraced house in South London was £50 a month. |
